For him it is essential that concept and craft should both be strong in his artworks. Wagner is mostly known for turning money paper into artworks; he has transformed one-dollar bills into pictures of people, plants and scenes in which he reproduces the effects of painting, tapestry, mosaics, and engravings.

Brigitte Waldach engages herself in a multimedia project called Sichtung – rot (searching - red). In her drawings, always made with crimson red on handmade paper, she focuses on space and figure. Her imagery has clear references to theater and cinema, but also literature and philosophy. Waldach’s use of the highly symbolic red colour helps to reinforce the mood of an intense psychological space. Her interest lies in the mixing and overlapping of different levels of reality, of truth and fiction, memory and imagination. Besides drawing she also creates site-specific works, installations and photography.

Kara Walker, née en 1969 aux Etats-Unis, vit et travaille à New York.
Walker est surtout connue pour ses silhouettes en papier noir, mais elle travaille aussi avec la vidéo, la peinture et les textes. Son œuvre explore des thèmes très chargés, comme la force, la suppression, la sexualité, les différences raciales et l'histoire douloureuse de l'esclavage. L'artiste empreinte des images de livres d'histoire qu'elle transforme en utilisant la technique du découpage.
La combinaison de faits historiques et de fiction crée des installations fascinantes et parfois choquantes. Le travail de Walker soulève des questions sur les préjugés raciaux et sur la sexualité qui continuent à jouer un rôle majeur dans la vie contemporaine.

Andy Warhol werd in 1928 in Pittsburgh geboren en stierf in 1987 in New York.
Na zijn studies vestigde hij zich in New York waar hij illustrator werd. Eind jaren 50 begon Warhol te schilderen; zijn eerste Pop-art werken, geïnspireerd op stripverhalen en advertenties, dateren uit 1961. Warhol werd echt beroemd het jaar daarop, in 1962 met de serie «Campbell soepblikken» die een ware sensatie was in de kunstwereld. Enige tijd daarna produceerde hij portretseries van filmsterren als Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley en Elizabeth Taylor.
Warhol heeft een grote waaier aan werken geproduceerd in de jaren ‘70 en ‘80: schilderijen, prints, foto’s en tekeningen.

Fotograaf Albert Watson werd in 1942 in Schotland geboren.
Hij studeerde grafische vormgeving, film en televisie. Hoewel fotografie in het begin gewoon een hobby was, heeft Watson de laatste 4 decennia een tal van fotoreportages verzorgd voor magazines als Vogue en Rolling Stone. Hij creëerde reclamecampagnes voor oa. Gap, Revlon en Chanel.
Watson heeft ook meer persoonlijke projecten zoals het fotograferen van zijn reizen en andere onderwerpen uit zijn interessesfeer. De beeldtaal van de fotograaf wordt bepaald door zijn eigen regels en kwaliteitseisen. De manier waarop hij gebruik maakt van het licht, met name voor fetish objecten en portretten, schept een meditatieve sfeer in de foto’s.

Marnie Weber’s work – which includes photography, sculpture, installation, video, collage and performance – is made up of strange and melancholic creatures with surprising costumes evolving in a marvelous but yet perverted world. She is inspired by cinema, fairytales, surrealism, and popular American imagery. Through her work, Weber always tries to interfere with the spectator’s expectations, as the Surrealists did.

Mathew Weir, né en 1977 en Angleterre, vit et travaille à Londres.
Intensément chargés avec diverses références visuelles et littéraires, les peintures et sculptures de Weir examinent les problématiques liées à l’esclavage, les maladies mentales, les stéréotypes sexuels et raciaux, ainsi que les représentations des idées ayant trait à la mort.
L'iconographie de ses tableaux s’inspire d’une tradition très spécifique de l'art décoratif des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles: la figurine en céramique. Ces figurines offrent une représentation très ornée et stylisée d'un nombre varié de personnages historiques, romanesques ou fantastiques, de personnages politiques de grande qualité morale ou de roman. Dans ces peintures et parfois de manière très forte, les objets sont mis en scène dans de riches et délicats décors, afin de mettre l’accent sur leur potentiel symbolique.

Wesley gebruikt vaak afgeleefde materialen in zijn werken, die de vorm van sculpturen, schilderijen, tekeningen of architectonische modellen kunnen nemen. Zijn creaties tonen een humoristische kijk op de wereld.

Joel Peter Witkin werd in 1939 in de Verenigde Staten geboren.
Hij leeft en werkt in New Mexico. Witkin ondernam Kunststudies, maar het was tijdens zijn legerdienst dat hij begon te fotograferen. Sinds 1976 vindt hij inspiratie in schilderijen van oude meesters, voornamelijk in mythologische of in christelijk geïnspireerde scenes (martelaren, heiligen, vanitas). Hij schraapt, tekent op de negatieven en verwerkt ze om aspecten van de werkelijkheid die hij niet wenst opgenomen te zien, te veranderen.
In zijn fotografische doeken uit Witkin een zekere meditatie over de dood, de realiteit van het lichaam, de seksualiteit en de donkere kant van elk individu. Zijn beelden, vaak hybride wezens, vervormde of geamputeerde lichamen, zijn soms moeilijk te benaderen.

Les créations de Wohnseifer – sculptures, peintures, installations et photographies – explorent des sujets politiques et font référence à l’histoire allemande moderne, souvent en combinant la réalité et la fiction. L’artiste s’approprie de marques et d’éléments du design qu’il personnalise en ajoutant d’autres niveaux de signification.
