Raphaël de Villers werd in 1969 in Frankrijk geboren. Hij leeft en werkt in Parijs.
De kunstenaar begon aanvankelijk met tekenen en schilderen om dan geleidelijk over te gaan tot driedimensionale werken gemaakt uit papier maché en gerecycleerde materialen. De drang om zijn werken een blijvend karakter te geven leidde hem naar de keramiek.
In zijn werken verkent en onderzoekt hij kleuren nader doorheen hun vibraties, transformaties en zelf ‘accidents de parcours’ tijdens het productieproces van keramiek. De Villers geeft aldus vorm aan een bestaand of ingebeeld universum, gegrepen uit een weelderige natuur vol échte of monsterachtige dieren die ons herinneren aan de middeleeuwse iconografie.

Rinus Van De Velde creates large-scale figurative charcoal drawings on paper. His works have always been based on photographs, and more recently on images in which he stages. He prepares the scene, writes a scenario, takes the picture and then, starts to draw. In the end, as he says, “drawing is just a small part of my work”. Van De Velde is collaborating with a friend, Koen Sels, who writes the texts that accompany each of his pieces. These captions are really important to Van De Velde because he wants to create a narrative, his own fictional universe. Without these texts, his artworks would be “just pictures without any context, and everything would be just about the quality of the picture”, as he testified.

Jan Van Imschoot, né en 1963 en Belgique, vit et travaille à Gand.
L’œuvre de Van Imschoot est caractérisée par sa critique sociale, cynisme et ironie. Ses sujets sont souvent dramatiques et très narratifs – l’artiste explore les côtés moins agréables de la société et a une préférence pour les thèmes avec une forte charge historique.
Pour Van Imschoot la peinture est à la fois support et message. «Les notions de représentation et de confusion linguistique sont des constantes dans mon œuvre. La confrontation entre l’intuitif, l’évacuation des connaissances accumulées, les constructions linguistiques de la peinture, de la photographie, du cinéma et de la littérature offrent la possibilité de jouer avec ces notions. La peinture - par sa capacité à fonctionner à différentes échelles, par l’usage de couches de peintures allant de la plus transparente à la plus opaque, grâce à un jeu complexe de significations, de formes et d’associations - est un medium qui permet de faire des liens avec d’autres langages et medias».

Michael van Ofen’s paintings might, at first sight, look like abstract works of art. Indeed, his work is abstract but the narrative is not, it is connected with reality. Portraits or landscapes emerge, arisen from a collective memory of pre-20th century art. Actually, he chooses subjects – animals, still lives, hunting or religious scenes –that were commonplace in painted art until the modern age. Nowadays, these classical topics seem to be declined by the artists. Van Ofen deconstructs this type of historical paintings into their painterly elements and reassembles them, creating a new work that expresses the essence of the original picture in minimum brushstrokes. This way, his paintings seem familiar in their allusion and simplicity; they indicate but do not disclose too much.

Multidisciplinary artist Levi van Veluw combines, sculpture, photography, installation and video, to create artworks, which are generally self-portraits. All his works are the result of a one-man process; he is meticulously involved at all stages of creation. The artist creates images that often consist of the illogical combinations of materials, patterns, colors, with his face as the only invariable factor. Van Veluw says: “By playing with the value of each material and by using them for a purpose that was not originally intended for them, I construct within the image, in a very small way, a different perspective on the world. (…) The expressionless, and almost universal face, allows the viewer to project himself onto the work.”

Nick Van Woert studied architecture and now creates sculptures. He believes in the semantics of material. Common materials are impregnated with meaning all through our daily relationship to them, which have nothing to do with the context of art. He connects anachronistically recent and ancient methods of production to discuss the notion of timelessness in art. By considering art as an essential language, Van Woert is fascinated by the evolution of these ancient supplies, from monolithic stones to modern mass-produced goods.

JCJ Vanderheyden werd in 1928 in Nederland geboren. Hij leeft en werkt in ’s Hertogenbosch.
Vanderheyden heeft een oeuvre opgebouwd dat uit schilderijen, foto’s, video’s, grafisch werk en installaties bestaat. De kunstenaar onderzoekt op subtiele wijze de basisprincipes van het schilderen en de waarneming van fenomenen als licht, ruimte en tijd.
Zijn werken worden gekenmerkt door het gebruikt van minimale middelen zoals delingen, illusionistische vlakken, graduele verschuivingen en sterk contrasterende kleurvelden.

Mariana Vassileva’s body of work includes sculptures, videos, photographs and drawings. Her creations are inspired by personal experiences and feelings she underwent on her move from East to West. Her videos take the viewers on meditative journeys through space and time. Curator Ralf Bartholomäus explains that “with simple but nevertheless symbol-laden pictures of great beauty, the artist succeeds in transporting such complex themes as fear, escape, orientation and the search for freedom. At the same time, Mariana Vassileva always manages to subliminally counteract the seemingly harmless casualness of her works.”

Sabine Villiard werd in 1972 in London geboren.
Ze leeft en werkt thans in Frankrijk. Villiard is al 15 jaar een succesvolle modefotografe. Ze heeft fotocampagnes voor Bourjois, Clarins en L’Oreal, onder anderen, verzorgd. Villiard’s werk vertoont enkele surrealistische trekken, tijdens de foto shoots speelt ze graag met haar modellen en verkent zij hun geestige kant.
'Femiman' is een term die gebruikt wordt in de modewereld voor androgyne en transsexuele modellen zoals Andrej Pejic, een 19-jaar oude servo-kroaat. «Andrej Pejic is heel fotogeniek, hij heft een bija transluciede huid die het licht zeer goed vangt. Het was erg makkelijk om hem te fotograferen, hij straalt een aangeboren ongedwongenheid uit en een heel speels karakter. (…) Wanneer ik hem voor het eerst zag, wist ik wel dat het een jongen was, maar hij had die natuurlijke manier van zijn, dat hij een zekere vrouwelijkheid uitstraalde. Ik heb hem gefotografeerd net zoals hij was, heel spontaan. Ik heb nooit gedacht een bepaalde mannelijke of vrouwelijke kant meer te belichten tijdens de shooting. Tijdens de fotossessie gidste ik hem bij het aannemen van een houding, maar ik heb hem de keuze gelaten de kant te tonen die hij zelf verkiesde.» Sabine Villiard

Evi Vingerling werd in 1979 in Nederland geboren. Zij leeft en werkt in Amsterdam.
De kunstenares focust zich al enige tijd op het minimalisme. Haar schilderijen, meestal in gouache of olie, verkennen de structuren en patronen in de wereld om ons heen. De vormen zijn ontdaan uit hun context en bewerkt.
Vingerling speelt met beweging en de vormen worden van hun symboliek losgemaakt, waardoor uiteindelijk alleen terugkerende lijnen en dunne lagen van kleur overblijven.
