"Obsession" january - march 2015

Born in the United Kingdom in 1920, he died in 2003.

An English photographer, painter, writer and curator, John Coplans is best known for his series of black and white self-portraits exploring his naked, aging body which he started taking in 1984. Even though his photographs depict the human body from the feet to the wrinkles of his neck or hands, they do not show his face even once, in doing so Coplans does not focus on a specific man or identity. He presents the human body as a surprising, intriguing object, fascinating in detail and malleability. His work also contrasts the cult of youth and beauty represented by commercial photography and what he considered as the vanities of the 1980s art world.
