Thomas Lerooy est né en Belgique en 1981. Il vit et travaille à Gand.
In his sculptures and drawings, Thomas Lerooy plays with images that take their inspiration from classical sculpture, books’ illustrations, anatomical drawings and grotesque pictures. His works bring to mind metaphysical questions as the artist offers his richly ironic explorations of such themes as creation, desire and death. His drawings celebrate the aesthetic tradition reaching back to Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, but also remind the vanitas paintings of the 17th century, mixed in with the grotesque and macabre humor of more recent artists like James Ensor, Félicien Rops and Antoine Wiertz.
