Les Artistes

 "Pair(s)" september - december 2015

Born in France in 1982, he lives and works in Saint-Cloud.

French painter Mathieu Cherkit’s works revolve around his family home in Saint-Cloud, which he inherited from his parents and grandparents. In the tradition of Dutch painters like Vermeer, Cherkit paints every room and every object with a great attention to detail: each object encapsulating a part of the history of the house and its inhabitants. While his paintings first appear like a faithful recording of reality, a closer look reveals distorted perspectives and strange details; likewise, Cherkit invents new, imaginary rooms that do not exist in real life. Thus, the artist moves “further and further away from Vuillard, and closer and closer to De Chirico” (Philippe Dagen).
