Born in Italy in 1922, he lives and works in Paris.

Pierre Cardin is an internationally known fashion designer. Even though he was born in Italy, he moved to France at an early age and took the French nationality. He started his career in the fashion industry by working for Elsa Schiaparelli and Christian Dior. He then created his own brand in 1950, with immediate success. Cardin created haute couture costumes and evening dresses, but also – and this was revolutionary at the time – prêt-à-porter fashion, which made high fashion affordable to a greater audience. He is considered as one of the inventors of futurist fashion in the 1960s, along with Paco Rabanne and André Courrèges. Characteristic for this period were his dresses made of round and triangular shapes, which he combined with modern techniques and avant-garde materials. Cardin also created costumes for Jean Cocteau’s The Beauty and the Beast (1946), for The Beatles as well as for the hugely successful TV series The Avengers (also known as Chapeau melon et bottes de cuir in French). Aside from his career as a fashion designer, Cardin is also a furniture designer and a businessman.
