Born in Sint-Truiden in 1963, he lives and works in Paris.
Johan Creten works with bronze and clay, a material he had discovered for himself in a clay studio left behind by students; in doing so, the artist is considered one of the precursors who introduced ceramics to contemporary art. Fascinated by its beauty, its symbolic impact and the richness of its history, the artist explores the medium through multiple techniques and scales. Creten’s œuvre raises existential questions such as the ambiguity of sexuality in the human race and the unpredictable strength of nature among others. In addition to this, the artist is interested in the fundamental aesthetic aspects of shape, color, material, volume, and how these structures can manifest as vehicles of imagination and criticism.
