Born in Italy in 1946, he lives and works between the USA and Italy.

Sandro Chia started of as a conceptual artist and moved towards a more figurative approach towards painting and sculpture. Chia’s works range from paintings and mosaics to sculptures and murals. He was a key member of the Transavanguardia, the Italian figurative painting, as well as a member of wider Neo-Expressionist movements around the world. He himself refers to his paintings as “mythical conceptual art” and celebrates in them man’s sensuality, animal vitality, and closeness to the natural world through themes of eroticism, melancholy, and death.
