Les Artistes

"Young Collectors" september - december 2013

Born in 1977 in Switzerland. Lives and works in Geneva.

Valentin Carron is mostly known for his sculptural work in which he explores cultural icons, particularly those associated with the rural area of his native Switzerland, like iron shop signs, crucifixes, mopeds, rustic architectural details, musical instruments, and roughly carved wooden bears. His works’ themes are power, politics and criticism of cultural artifacts and institutions. He borrows and adapts the internationally renowned vocabulary of the style of his alpine home region and makes it his own. Through stylistic and material tensions, his art casts doubt as to the authenticity of the vernacular whilst developing a highly personal artistic discourse.
