Ahmed Mater, born in 1979 in Saudi Arabia, lives and works in Abha. Mater’s work, which encompasses photography, calligraphy, painting, installation, performance, and video, explores the narratives and aesthetics of Islamic culture in an era of globalization, consumerism and transformation. It is also influenced by his early education and life as a medical doctor, as well as by his traditional upbringing and Saudi culture.
He has managed to create a new visual language within the boundaries of his faith, his culture and scientific training, and has broken new ground for contemporary art in the Arab world. Mater ’s works draw in by the arresting and unresolved tension between an objective representation of the human body and a subjective expression of faith and superstition.
