Matthew Brannon, born in 1971 in the USA, lives and works in New York. Using the aesthetics of graphic art, Brannon’s oeuvre explores the gulf between social ideals and personal crisis. He often situates his work around themes of self-destructive behaviors that outwardly reflect inner dysfunction.
Objects from everyday life, such as restaurant menus, advertisements and posters, inspire him. Elements from these items are incorporated into his own creations – lithographs and screen prints - that carry both the suggestion of mass reproduction and aura of original artworks. Brannon frequently combines text and image, exploring the relationship between language and actuality.
